Stringendosi alla terra, poesia di Robert Frost

Amore alle labbra era un tocco
Dolce quanto reggevo;
E parve una volta troppo;
Io dell'aria vivevo

Che a fiotti da dolci cose
M'investiva… profumo di muschio
Da giovani vigne nascoste
In fondo a un poggio al crepuscolo?

Dolente io ero e stordito
Da fiori di caprifogli
Che scuotono quando li cogli
Una rugiada alle dita.

Bramai forti dolcezze, ma solo
Da giovane parvero forti;
Il petalo della rosa
Fu quello che punse e morse.

Nessuna gioia adesso che mi piaccia
Se non mischiata a dolore,
A sfinimento e ad errore:
Per questo io amo la traccia

Di lacrime, il marchio che resta
D'un quasi troppo amore,
Il dolce d'amara corteccia
E delle spezie il bruciore.

Se morta, dolente e segnata
Ritiro via la mano
Dopo averla premuta, schiacciata
Nell'erba e nella sabbia,

Quel poco male non basta:
Io voglio più forza e più peso
Perché la terra ancor più rude prema
Tutto il mio corpo steso.

[To Earthward]

Love at the lips was touch
As sweet as I could bear;
And once that seemed too much;
I lived on air

That crossed me from sweet things,
The flow of - was it musk
From hidden grapevine springs
Down hill at dusk?

I had the swirl and ache
From sprays of honeysuckle
That when they're gathered shake
Dew on the knuckle.

I craved strong sweets, but those
Seemed strong when I was young;
The petal of the rose
It was that stung.

Now no joy but lacks salt
That is not dashed with pain
And weariness and fault;
I crave the stain

Of tears, the aftermark
Of almost too much love,
The sweet of bitter bark
And burning clove.

When stiff and sore and scarred
I take away my hand
From leaning on it hard
In grass and sand,

The hurt is not enough:
I long for weight and strength
To feel the earth as rough
To all my length.
